CHILDREN’S HEALTH: VAGINAL BLEEDING

by admin Posted in General health

Symptom: Bleeding that is not due to normal menstruation

Home care:

-    If the condition causes a burning sensation on urination, have the child urinate while in à bathtub of water.

-    Bleeding due to minor bruises or lacerations can be treated at home. All other abnormal vaginal bleeding requires medical attention.

Precautions

-    If a girl is less than nine or ten years old and has vaginal bleeding with or without breast development, she should be seen by a doctor.

-    If there is any suspicion of sexual molestation, contact your doctor immediately.

-    Any girl whose mother took diethyl-stilbesterol (DES) during pregnancy should be seen by a gynecologist at the beginning of puberty whether or not bleeding is present.

-    A baby girl may have a bloody discharge from the vagina during the first two weeks of life.

A baby girl may have a bloody discharge from the vagina during the first two weeks of life; this is usually due to the withdrawal of her mother’s hormones after birth. The most common cause of vaginal bleeding is, of course, menstruation, which begins at puberty, any time between the ages of nine and 17. “Precocious” puberty may begin before age nine, even as early as five or six. With both normal menstruation and precocious puberty, the first menstrual flow is preceded by development of the breasts.

Vaginal bleeding any time after the immediate post-birth period in a girl whose breasts have not developed, or bleeding between menstrual periods, is most often due to injury. Wounds in the vaginal area, even those of considerable size, heal rapidly with no infection or scarring.

Less common causes of vaginal bleeding are inflammation of the vagina, a foreign body in the vagina, prolapse (slipping from the usual position) of the lining of the urethra (the tube leading to the urinary bladder), and tumours of the vagina or the uterus.
